Hats are made from commercially-made
hat straw in a variety of colours, and occasionally also of raffia. They are generously trimmed with loops of
hand-dyed silk ribbons and crescents of unusual but natural feathers. I aim to make a fun but luxurious hat ideal
for a child’s dressing up box, but enjoy the opportunity to arrange the
tiniest of feathers to give a very detailed effect.
While my hat boxes may be at home in a Victorian boudoir, I like to
think that they can also do service in a modern nursery or playroom as storage
for toys and dolls. I like the rich
tones and decoupage effect of old tapestries and textiles, which are
reminiscent of a more romantic age.
The scrap books, pictures, flower presses and pot pourri contain pressed or dried flowers from my own garden. They are ideal miniature items for a
Victorian house but may also be a pretty collection for a little doll from
any era. The home-made scrap book has
the name, address and date of real people who lived in my home town during
the 1800s. The maple wood flower press
has brass screws which hold together the papers and a whole collection of
pressed flowers.
